As a trained Meisner actor, you already know how to listen, respond spontaneously, and let what is happening in the moment affect what happens next. Comedy improv builds on those skills by inviting you to recognize the unexpected potentials, take creative risks, and follow possibilities you might never discover from a script.

Taking the Leap

Some of the funniest moments happen when an actor lets go of where a scene would go and discovers where it can go. A word takes on an unexpected meaning. A perfectly reasonable response suddenly becomes absurd. A character emerges that you didn’t know was there. One spontaneous choice gives another actor something unexpected to work with—and the scene takes off.

Comedy improv gives you the freedom to explore those moments without having to plan them. You learn to trust your instincts, expand your imagination, make stronger creative choices, and discover characters and situations spontaneously.

And you don’t have to try to be funny. The comedy often comes from recognizing and committing to what is already happening in the scene.

Expand What You Can Do on Stage

Comedy improv provides a different kind of workout for skills Meisner actors already use. There is no script telling you what happens next. You listen, observe, respond, and create with the other performers—right on the spot.

The result is an opportunity to become more comfortable taking risks, responding to the unexpected, exploring character choices, and allowing your creativity to take a scene somewhere you hadn’t anticipated.

Your Instructor — Tim Magoun
